What is Shams Dubai?

Official Net Metering Scheme of Dubai

Shams Dubai is Dubai’s net metering scheme that encourages building owners to install solar photovoltaic panels on the roofs of their premises to generate electricity from solar power and export any excess to the power grid (DEWA, 2017a).

Launched by DEWA
in 2015

Launched in 2015 by Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA), the initiative supports the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to make Dubai the smartest city in the world (DEWA, 2018).

Aims for 25% clean energy by 2030

By 2030, 25% of Dubai’s total power output will come from clean energy, as part of Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy 2050 (DEWA, 2017a). At the end of 2017, DEWA has connected 453 photovoltaic installations with a total capacity of about 18.7 megawatts (DEWA, 2017b).
